The Relaxing oasis of Ahalanui |
Ahalanui County Beach Park, also fondly known as the "Warm Ponds," has become a favorite among our local destinations. Only fifteen minutes from Pahoa, this beautiful pool is heated naturally by the volcano, creating a relaxing ocean environment. During high tide, we enjoy basking in the warm depths, as fresh ocean waters rush in through the channel, refreshing the water constantly. Although this spot can be crowded at times, one always feels the zen experience, as everyone is mindful of others and is there to relax also. The park includes lifeguards on duty until 4:30 pm, then after, it is a personal responsibility to swim safe until closing at 7 pm. The park is open daily from 7 am and is free of charge. Not only is swimming the main attraction, but also sightseeing and photography. Local vendors frequent this spot, with fish taco stands, fresh fruit and music playing. As you enter the park, you'll see people either relaxing on the warm grass or underneath the pavilions. This is truly a place for discovering or practicing meditation while swimming or enjoying a quality day with the family. Furthermore, during high tide, a shallow pool emerges for the keiki or children to play in. Fish come and go and there are tiny crabs to be found among the rocks. The most enjoyable part of the entire day, is jumping off the sides into the water. Our kids never tire of this and even adults will join in at times! Higher tide is the perfect and most safe time to perform this activity.
Ahalanui has been a very healing and rejuvenating spot since we discovered it upon moving here. Whether visiting the Big Island or living here, one must journey to this oasis and find oneself. To feel the warmth of the water and the sun upon your face as you float with eyes closed. The only sounds you may hear are the faint hum of people chatting or laughing. If you listen close, you can feel the beating of your heart and feel the rush from the ocean channeling in. So visit, relax and renew yourself and life will never be the same!
